Amidst an ongoing opioid crisis that has ravaged America for more than two decades, new challenges have emerged. One of them is bolstering family caregivers – and crafting strategies designed to safeguard them from harm. As the U.S. population ages, the responsibility for primary medical care is increasingly falling on the shoulders of family members. This development often leads to stresses – and creates a greater risk for opioid abuse within the family. Drug prescriptions intended for limited use, or aging family members, are now more easily accessible in the home – to both adults and young people – some of whom have battled previous addiction issues of their own. RealClearPolitics, in partnership with MAPDA, will host a discussion on the vulnerability of families on the frontlines of caregiving and healthcare support – and explore public policy options designed to protect families and our communities.

The past year has laid bare the myriad problems associated with the U.S.’ overreliance on mineral imports and adversarial approach to domestic mineral production. U.S. mineral import reliance has more than doubled over the past 25 years while mineral demand for key technologies and industries is soaring. Whether through global shutdowns imposed by countries holding the position as a lead supplier of a key commodity or trade tensions with geopolitical rivals, multiple threats have emerged to American industry’s ability to get the minerals needed for energy, technology, medical and manufacturing supply chains. Congress has taken note with a flurry of key pieces of legislation intended to support minerals mining in the U.S. This roundtable will discuss the severity of the challenge in the U.S., the increasing demands that lie ahead, the policy solutions that are within reach, and how the election may impact it all.

Minerals are the foundation of our technology, defense, energy and manufacturing supply chains, but the industry’s importance is often overlooked by consumers who take for granted that certain materials will always be available in abundant supply. The minerals mining industry supports 1.2 million domestic jobs and impacts Americans’ daily lives in ways many people may not realize. The raw materials from U.S. mines are critical to advanced technologies and countless other essential industries. As demand increases for the minerals that help power our increasingly tech-heavy world, access to those natural resources must grow along with it. In partnership with National Mining Association and its Minerals Make Life initiative, RealClearPolitics will delve deeply into the public policy questions surrounding the importance of minerals, and how the nation’s manufacturing sector, national defense and even green energy technologies depend on a healthy domestic minerals mining industry and improved access to domestic minerals.

As energy sectors adapt to U.S. consumers' modern demands, constantly working to improve their value and the efficiency of their products, Americans are changing the future of fuel with their purchasing decisions. As a result of evolving consumer patterns in utility generation, the administration is proposing intervention in energy markets that are falling behind. Do U.S. residents have a voice in the discussion of energy sources that will fuel the nation's future? How will the roles of lenders and investors change the projected path forward for energy sectors? How do security concerns factor into these decisions for government and the public? Can the workers from shrinking markets be retrained and integrated into the growing fields? And what mix of fuel sources will sustain America's energy needs for the future?
